Retail turnover is inherent! Maintaining a pool of qualified employees is a huge challenge. Recruiting is vital, but it takes time away from the real business. Most retailers also lack time to interview and access to proper screening tools. Recruiting becomes a gut-feel; extend an offer and hope for the best. To meet this challenge, RMA has teamed with Express Personnel to develop the Retail Staffing Program. Express is the nation’s largest Human Resource Center and will maintain a qualified pool of associates to meet full/part-time positions to remove the pain, time, and cost of recruiting for all RMA members. Every Express associate will undergo these screening steps:

  1. Meaningful Interview—uncover applicant’s job desires, skills, work history and availability.
  2. Skills Testing—validate applicant’s skills noted during the interview through testing.
  3. Criminal Background Check—conduct a full Virginia criminal background check.
  4. Drug Screening—screen for the most commonly abused drugs.
  5. Employment Verification—a minimum of two positive references are required.
  6. SSN Verification—confirm eligibility via Homeland Security’s Verification System.

RMA members get access to prescreened retail sales associates at the discounted service rate of $13.50/hr (guaranteed until 1/2/08 and reviewed every six months). The associate is paid $9/hr. To put this into perspective using state and national data, a $9/hr employee actually costs an employer a minimum of $13.84/hr when including FICA, Unemployment, Workers Compensation, Recruiting, Background Checks, Drug Screening, Benefits and other administrative costs. Simply put, there is no more cost-effective or risk-free way to hire…period! In addition, this agreement will allow RMA members to hire any Express associate permanently after 520 hrs with no conversion fee!
